With the US gone, the world must keep an eye on China’s human rights
This week, the United States formally pulled out of the United Nations Human Rights Council (HRC). The US Mission to the UN tweeted: “With members like China, Cuba, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Venezuela the Human Rights Council is not worth its name.” Conveniently, the tweet did not mention US allies such as Saudi Arabia, responsible for human rights violations on a mass scale. The HRC is far from perfect, and its membership is a frequent cause of concern for human rights organizations like Amnesty International.
